"Power to the People: A Tribute to Black Freedom Fighters"
Altar, Dia De Los Muertos Celebration 2000, Fruitvale, Oakland
This piece was a collaboration between Xochitl Nevel Guerrero, Roberto Guerrero, Rebecah Pacheco and myself. The altar was put up on International Blvd. as part of the annual Fruitvale Dia De Los Muertos Celebration. The piece honors Black revolutionaries, including Malcolm X, Ida B. Wells, Huey Newton, Lil' Bobby Hutton and Harriet Tubman. The altar also mourns the victims of lynchings, police brutality, and white supremacy. Mike "Dream" Francisco, a Filipino graffiti King, is honored in this altar because of his love for the Black freedom movement and his love for the teachings of Malcolm X.
