This poster was commissioned by the Women of Color Resource Center for their May event, Fashion Resistance to Militarism. The event, hosted by Aya de Leon, was designed to be a commentary on how militarism penetrates fashion during war time, and how to use fashion to subvert war politics.
It was challenging for me to develop this poster because it was not something that was overtly-in-your-face political. My original concept for the piece was a juxtaposition of a woman affected by war alongside a woman consumed by fashion. But that concept did not work out. The image shown here is the final product.
As part of the event, fashion designers were asked to design pieces that portray what they view as resistance to militarism and war. One designer, Chocolate Baby Designs, developed concepts along the lines of gender and sexuality - making interventions against militarism through the unpacking of gender roles. Another vignette focused on street culture as resistance to militarism - street wear that challenges the presence of military/police in communities.
