Because she was without means, the Department of Social Services took away her child at birth to turn him over to an adoption agency. With the language and cultural barrier, my mother could do very little. 31 years later, my brother came searching for his birth family and wrote a letter to my mother requesting to meet her. They were reunited in 2001, thus the title of the piece.

Fashion Resistance to Militarism
18 in. x 24 in.
2 Available for Sale, $ 50 each
Full Color Offset

Femicidio (Femicide)
18 in. x 24 in.
5 Available for Sale, $ 65 each
Full Color Offset
Description: This piece is about the more than 350 women in Juarez, Mexico who have been kidnapped, raped and killed since 1993. Visual artists have been pivotal in bringing international attention to the crisis, but most have favored depictions of mutilated body parts to emphasize the seriousness of the crimes. As a woman, I found it problematic that victims were depicted as carnage. I instead created a piece that addressed other aspects of the issue, including how the mothers self-organized to seek justice for their missing daughters.

3 Available for Sale, $ 125 each
Silkscreen: 3-Color, Limited Edition, Handprinted Silkscreen Print, Archival Lennox Paper, Printed in San Leandro, CA 2003
Description: Media is filled with stereotypical imagery, denying our basic humanity and rendering us invisible. Too few outlets tell our stories. The connections between media -- its form, content, and who owns it -- is inextricably tied to issues of social justice, power, and equity. Communication is a human right, yet our communities are denied this fundamental right every day. This will not change until we hold all institutions, public and private, to a higher standard of accountability, one that ensures that media serves the needs of all the people.

The piece depicts the two sides of my person, one side being the self-centered, neurotic, workaholic artist.  I created this piece as I was undergoing the physical and emotional separation. In those conditions, one finds it hard to imagine another possibility for love, the hours pass very slowly.... at that time my motivation to create work was extremely low, however, I managed to create this piece, which became an outlet for me.

SOLD OUT
Silkscreen: 2-Color, Limited Edition, Handprinted Silkscreen Print, red spray paint, Printed in Mexico City, Mexico 2006
Description: This piece was printed in a very small run of about 10 prints. I was visiting Mexico City in 2006 and I took the opportunity to meet up with my colleagues from El Faro Centro Cultural. It is there that I printed this piece, with the assistance of my friend and student Sombra. This piece is named after him. Sombra is an extremely talented printmaker, but like many of his peers, he lives at the poverty level in Mexico City and has to spend most of his time surviving. He was one of my best students in the workshop I taught in 2005 during my stay in Mexico City. As we were printing. the emulsion kept falling off the screen, so we were only able to print a few of these. At one point, I could no longer print the red hand, so I had to spray it on with a stenciled film.
