Migrating Species - The Elephant

Migration is natural and migration is beautiful. Animals, insects, and ocean creatures all migrate. These hand dyed, hand printed flags are part of a 4-piece series that depicts popular migrating creatures - the Monarch butterfly, the sea turtle, the whale, and the African elephant. Just like other life on the planet, human beings migrate because we are a part of nature. Nature is the most powerful system of all, without nature we could not breathe, nor survive as a species. What if we viewed immigrant families the way we view butterflies? I created this art piece as an invitation to realign our relationship to nature, and to remind us that the concept of nation state was created less than 500 years ago. We humans are over 2 million years old.
