Dreamers Welcome

This poster was commissioned by the National Educators Alliance in 2013 and distributed to teachers and classrooms around the country. This piece was a reinterpretation of my classic Migration is Beautiful image, originally created in 2012. The monarch butterfly represents the natural act that is migration. Human beings have been migrating since the beginning of time. We are a part of nature, and it is in our human nature to move, just as all other species move. This art piece encourages viewers to imagine a world without borders. It was especially powerful for teachers to put this poster up as a symbol of welcoming, particularly after the 2012 passage of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) which benefitted hundreds of thousands of Dreamers . Like the monarch butterfly, human beings cross borders in search of safer habitats. Like the monarch butterfly, human beings cross borders in order to survive. Each wing in this butterfly shows a human profile.
