Malcolm X (2005)
“Culture is an indispensable weapon in the freedom struggle.” - Malcolm X
Malcolm X is the revolutionary thinker that has most influenced my political framework. His most powerful lesson was around self determination, that is, the belief that we as people of color should be in control of our own destiny and speak for ourselves.
When I dropped out of college and began my journey as an artist activist, I met former Black Panthers who introduced me to the teachings of Malcolm X. It was through him that I found my calling as a cultural worker—and made the commitment to dedicate my life to this revolutionary change.
I’ve created many artworks honoring Malcolm X’s legacy, and I’m proud to have co-founded an organization in Oakland, CA - the Eastside Arts Alliance, that celebrates his life every year through the Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival. The year 2025 marked the 25th anniversary of the festival—twenty five years of lifting up his teachings through music, art, and community.
